IOS 9 Security Flaw Lets Hackers Bypass The Lockscreen
As mentioned above you can quickly get stock prices by typing in a company name or ticker symbol in your Spotlight Search bar.
Normally the owner of any locked iPhone who is unable to remember his or her code simply can’t access the contents of their device.
The security flaw allows a malcontent with physical access to your iDevice to use Siri to bypass Apple’s Lock screen – even if you have set up Touch ID with your fingerprint.
The blame can’t entirely be thrusted upon Siri as the engineers at Apple have failed to notice the flaw even while fixing other issues related to iOS 9.
News of the hack has been making its way around the Internet over the past couple of days, with write-ups from The Hacker News, BGR and Apple Insider. After this, the hacker asks Siri to access the Clock app and can get to the Contacts and Photos apps from there, reports The Independent.
The exploit has been shown in a proof-of-concept video by Jose Rodriguez, who has a track record of finding similar bugs in iOS. It will now be equipped with a bigger screen and a microphone implanted in the remote that can access Siri. (We don’t want to outline the steps here, but the video above has the details.) AppleInsider notes that Rodriguez also found a lock-screen bypass a couple of years ago, in iOS 6.1.3. Once all three phrases are repeated successfully the “Hey Siri” feature will once again be enabled.
We’ll keep you updated on when Apple bring in a fix, which will require a download.
The option you’re looking for is in the Settings app. Select the Touch ID & Passcode tab from the menu on the left (you’ll have to enter your current – presumably six-digit – passcode to access this section), then tap Change Passcode (in blue text in the third section down). In fact, some believe this was his master plan all along: Forget the Gen-Xers and their clumsy Windows desktops and laptops and instead go after the next wave.
If in a bolt of excitement you have already made the switch to iOS 9, then wish you never lose your iPhone.
