Planned Parenthood: ‘Fiorina is lying’
The former HP CEO made the remarks at the September 16 Republican primary debate last week as she dared President Obama and Hillary Clinton to watch the Planned Parenthood videos.
In the wake of several undercover videos published by the Center for Medical Progress, Fiorina and other GOP presidential candidates have gone on the offensive, vowing to fight and defund Planned Parenthood, CNN reported.
On September 19, the super-PAC backing Fiorina’s candidacy, Carly for America, posted a video to its YouTube page that appears to be a home-brewed version of the previously nonexistent video. The fact-checking organization PolitiFact rated Fiorina’s statement “mostly false” because the video produced and edited by abortion rights opponents does not show Planned Parenthood staffers uttering those words before a viable fetus.
It then showed comments from news sites and organizations which had criticized Fiorina before it showed the horrific clips. “But anybody who has watched the videos would find Fiorinas off-the-cuff account pretty accurate… the video Fiorina probably had in mind included eyewitness descriptions accompanied by borrowed footage of a fetus dying in a metal bowl, its leg kicking, to illustrate the witnesss recollection of seeing precisely that in another case”. The next day, Fiorina again said she saw the video, which does not exist. Although a small portion of the participant’s interview is overlaid with a photo of a fetus, the film does not contain any video footage of an actual abortion.
[Host Chris] WALLACE: First of all, do you acknowledge what every fact checker has found, that as horrific as that scene is, it was only described on the video by someone who claimed to have seen it? Planned Parenthood should forthrightly declare what it does, morally and ethically, in providing cells for scientific research – and what it doesn’t, and will never, do.
It has the unintended effect of making Planned Parenthood look slightly better. “This fraudulent video is beneath a serious candidate for the presidency, and you should take it down immediately”. She’s also urged congress to mount a defunding effort against Planned Parenthood during the coming budget negotiations.
Other campaigns have climbed down from similar claims about the videos. But Fiorina wants to be president, and she should correct the record. But really, shame on Fiorina – as well as rivals such as Sen.
Planned Parenthood spokesman Eric Ferrero also spoke out against Fiorina, arguing that the GOP presidential hopeful is “lying” about the video. But anti-choice activists, supporters, and legislators are willing to withhold medical care from low-income communities, perpetuate out-and-out blatant lies, and shut down the government itself to destroy Planned Parenthood.
Requests for additional comment from Planned Parenthood and the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform have not yet been returned to TheBlaze. Marco Rubio said that Planned Parenthood “created an incentive for people not just to look forward to having more abortions, but being able to sell that fetal tissue”, as if women were bringing in fetuses and exchanging them for cash. Klein was relying on another Vox writer, Sarah Kliff, who claims to have watched all the tapes and has thus become the authority figure for most left-leaning media members who, like undergrads faced with a book that is of no interest to them, would rather rely on Kliff’s notes. That people treated her the way she should be treated, as all the candidates should be treated, as an equal on that stage.
