Explosion hits displaced persons’ camp in Adamawa — Breaking News

Suspected Boko Haram extremists killed at least 54 people when they detonated explosive devices in crowded places in Maiduguri, the capital of the north-eastern state of Borno, Nigerian police said.

In another development, some suspected members of Boko Haram sect ambushed an operational vehicles of security operatives along Maiduguri- Dikwa- Gamboru Ngala road on Saturday.

Police spokesman Victor Isuku said 97 people were wounded in Sunday’s attack. However, they bore the hallmarks of the Islamist militant group which has waged a six-year insurgency to form a state adhering to strict Islamic laws, a conflict that has killed thousands.

Since President Muhammadu Buhari took office in May, northern Nigeria has witnessed a wave of attacks and Maiduguri was targeted nearly weekly.

Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden”, controls parts of northeastern Nigeria and says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government. The university hired over 80 hunters to provide safety against possible attacks, said the vice chancellor of the Adamawa State University in Mubi, Prof.

“It will be recalled that their previous attempts to attack and blow up Allau dam was thwarted,” he said. The schools are being reopened while troops continue to recapture territory from the insurgent’s, military spokesman Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman said.

“We heard the first sound around 7:40 pm (1840 GMT) shortly before we entered the mosque for the last prayers of the day”, said Musa, who lives in the nearby Bulunkutu neighbourhood. “They are all liars”.

“We are still at battle ground”, Abubakar Shekau, the leader of terrorist group said in audio recording posted on YouTube that couldn’t immediately be verified.

Cameroon is a major contributor to an 8,700-strong, Nigerian-led regional force expected to start operations against Boko Haram this year.
