Following that, Pichai explained navigational, safety and other uses of Street View and Google Earth to the Prime Minister.
India’s technological infrastructure is about to make a huge upgrade as CEO of Google Sundar Pichai announces that the company will be installing wireless networks in train stations scattered across the country.
“I grew up in India and saw the transformation of technology“.
“For 15 hours you are sitting at your computers finding solutions to problems”.
India will play a big part in driving technology forward in the future, Google CEO Sunder Pichai said, at a dinner hosted in honour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In wake of PM Modi’s visit to Google, Chef Irfan Dama had recreated Indian flavours with samosa, chana and jalebi on menu.
Mr. Pichai who was in India previous year, praised the presence of what he described as “hungry” entrepreneurs, the same kind like in the Silicon Valley.
At Googleplex, Modi also witnessed the start of a 15-hour hackathon or a marathon software coding session with some 150 Indian programmers looking to produce software and applications relevant to India for Modi’s Digital India and Skill India missions.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that technology will bring qualitative change in life with time and through its proper utilisation.
Modi asked if Khagaul could be pinpointed on Google Earth.
Another project that was shown to Modi was Project Iris, smart lens that measure glucose levels.
In a lighter vein, he said technology was born to save time but what happened was just the opposite.
More than 45,000 people have registered for free passes for the event at the 19,000-seat SAP Centre organised by an Indian American group. I vividly remember the frenetic energy at the various stations along the way and marveled at the incredible scale and scope of Indian Railways. “This is the new power of democracy”, he added.
