College Football: Memorable night for Utah QB Travis Wilson
After the first two quarters, Arizona State didn’t have a chance against USC.
Oregon hasn’t lost this badly since a 54-0 loss at home to Washington in 1977.
“Coach always tells us football is a game of mistakes”, said Ihenacho, who was covering the targeted receiver on two of Utah quarterback Travis Wilson’s four touchdown passes.
Whittingham said the win will provide the Utes with “great momentum” going into a bye week.
“Utah played great, give them a ton of credit”, Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. Utah rolled over the Ducks 62-20 on Saturday night at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks’ scoring defense was at 104th in the country.
However, of all the positive numbers that Utah’s defense posted during this game, here’s the one that stands out: the Utes held Oregon to 400 yards of offense – its lowest output since 2013.
Utah running back Devontae Booker (23) carries the ball during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Oregon, Saturday, September 26, 2015, in Eugene, Ore. While it still has to play a full slate of games in the Pac-12 South – the toughest division in college football – Utah’s performance against Oregon left no doubt that it can compete against the best teams in the land. Former quarterback Ty Griffin even got some snaps. The Gators and Wolverines, both with first-year head coaches, are in the top 25 for the first time this week. He was ineffective playing with a broken index finger which had kept him out of last week’s game Georgia State, and was replaced by Jeff Lockie in the second quarter.
“The biggest thing was just that I made smart decisions and made accurate throws”, Wilson said. I will just say that it’s something I haven’t seen before and it’s certainly not in the same class as dancing on the “O”. The Utes’ 62 points were the most scored against a PAC-12 opponent since joining the league in 2011, and also the most the Ducks have ever allowed in Eugene.
As for the Ducks, they have a lot of issues to deal with.
Know that Utah exceeded even the profundity of a three-play, 15-yard non-drive by one of its neighbors. The Utes averaged 8 yards per play as they racked up 530 total yards of offense. Wilson’s offense did not back down from Oregon and scored on 10 of the 12 drives he was in the game, which was only three quarters.
UCLA and USC took down the Arizonas by a sum of 98-44. Though UCLA is ranked the highest of the Pac-12 schools at No. 9, the steady stream of injuries that has hit the team has to make you wonder about whether the Bruins can stay there as the season moves on. This loss was reminiscent of losses of years long gone, days when Oregon couldn’t pretend to have talent on par with most of the teams on its schedule. And that could be a problem in the playoff race for the conference that missed out last season despite two dominant teams. They are playing like a defense who can go out on the field and get a 3 & out like it’s no problem, and it all falls back on Coach MacIntyre.
Indiana is 4-0 (its best start since 1990) and has won four straight for the first time in 28 years.
At 4-0, the Wildcats are trying to bore their way to a Big Ten title.
“The cool thing about where we’re at right now is that we’re really not clicking at the level we know we can”, said optimistic quarterback Nate Sudfeld. I got nothing. I can’t think of any word or combination of words that can aptly describe what I had just watched. They kicked field goals-to take a 6-0 lead.
Michigan State is still sitting at No. 2 behind top-ranked Ohio State, with a resume bolstered mostly by beating the Ducks at home.
