Prime Minister Narendra Modi Returns After US, Ireland Tour
Last week, ahead of his USA visit, Modi signed off on a $2.5 billion deal with Boeing (NYSE:BA) to buy Apache and Chinook helicopters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been received nearly “like a star” at most of the events and parties that he attended during his five-day American trip.
“(India) has moved on from scriptures to satellites”, Modi said. “We recognise that changes that take place, on one hand should not diminish the opportunity of small countries in the Security Council and on the other hand should recognise the geopolitical realities of massive countries like India“, Kenny said.
However, a controversy brewed on social media with internet activists claiming that anyone changing their profile pictures using the tool was supporting Facebook’s Internet.org programme.
Modi visited Tesla Motors headquarters on Saturday and met Chief Executive Elon Musk, where the two discussed renewable energy.
“I have got this probed, it’s not the case”, the Congress leader said, adding that they were not an affluent family but at the same time they were not that poor that they had to work at somebody else’s home to make a living.
We’ve elevated our ties.
Earlier in the day, Modi met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai to announce a deal that Google will install high-speed wi-fi in about 400 of India’s railway stations, including 100 of the busiest stations by the end of the year. Critics say Modi’s digital push could impinge on the privacy and the rights of Indians, others allege his government suppresses dissent and religious freedom. He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, may have done it. According to the BBC, more than 20,000 people turned out to support him, although there were also protesters present, who blame Modi for not doing more to prevent the killing of Muslims during the 2002 Gujarat riots. “Half were protesters shouting over metal barricades and holding signs that said “Modi believes in violence, not development”, and “#ModiFail” that resulted in several scuffles.
Talking about their campaign, a spokesperson for the group told Scroll, “The American public – and in particular, the leaders of Silicon Valley – must remember that Modi is not simply a prime minister making a trade visit, he is a man responsible for genocide”.
