Reports Of Active Shooter At Oregon Community College
At least one gunman killed seven to 10 people and injured about 20 others Thursday at a community college in southwest Oregon, state officials told NBC News.
Gov. Kate Brown said the suspect was “a 20-year-old male”.
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said at a Thursday news conference that offers exchanged gunfire with the shooter and that “he is deceased”. It is located in Roseburg, about 175 miles south of Portland. “Please just pray for the families and parents of these students”, she said.
Officers are said to have responded to reports of an “active shooter” on campus at about 10:38 a.m. PT. The Oregonian, citing police scanner traffic says the shooter is “down”.
This shooting marks the 295th mass shooting in 2015, leaving 365 injured and 1,082 dead.
A 19-year-old student is killed and two others are wounded in a shooting at Seattle Pacific University in Washington before another student tackles the gunman as he pauses to reload. Described as a picturesque campus in the North Umpqua River Valley, the school’s website says it is “a peaceful, safe atmosphere, and year-round recreational activities”, according to its website.
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said: “Oregonians everywhere want Roseburg to know we’re praying for them”.
“It’s been a awful day”, said Hanlin. Multiple ambulances were reported to be on scene.
Neither state police nor the sheriff’s office returned calls from The Associated Press seeking details.
The White House says President Barack Obama is being briefed about the latest U.S. mass shooting.
Students were bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds, where friends and family were meeting them.
Numerous reports indicate that the suspect has been taken into custody after opening fire at the Umpqua Community College in Oregon. It is unclear if he was a student at the college.
Joe Olson, the former president of the college, said it has only one unarmed security officer on duty at any time.
According to the Oregon State Police scanner traffic, authorities were preparing to release students from their classrooms, but asked that they be “patted down” before they were allowed to leave campus.
The fire and EMS agency serving Douglas County then reported on Twitter that there were multiple casualties. CNN reported that four guns belonging to the shooter were recovered from the scene.
Umpqua is said to have about 3,000 full-time students.
