Chaffetz: I don’t expect to win speakership
King is hoping the candidates for speaker explain tonight how they plan to restore the power of the legislative branch.
The leading candidate is California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the current House majority leader. He’s going to fall short of the 218 votes on the floor of House. “There is no clear path to victory for anyone to become speaker of the U.S. House”.
The House GOP is supposed to vote by secret ballot on Thursday, following by a floor vote in the full House later in the month.
Chaffetz, R-Utah, made the announcement in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “I’m just someone who was smart enough to recognize it and try to get ahead of it”. “I think the Senate majority leader is wrong. That’s what we are going to have to overcome”.
House Speaker John Boehner is delaying elections for two key leadership posts.
The problem with how Congress is run, he said, is best seen in the leadership’s consistent effort to push off big bills like budget bills until it’s so close to a deadline that members have no choice but to vote for the leadership’s package. “So the question is, would the rest of the group come along and support?” he said. “We are looking for specifics-not just assurances, but guarantees”. So far, though, McCarthy’s foreign-policy forays have done little to bolster his image. There’s 246 Republicans that will vote, but there are almost 50 people and a growing number that will not and can not vote for Kevin McCarthy as the speaker on the floor. Meanwhile, the narrative that Boehner was an ineffective leader is a storyline long advanced by the Freedom Caucus and beloved by President Obama (hint, hint, boys).
“Knowing Jason as I do, he would not enter into this lightly”, Harding said.
The conservative Chaffetz provides a viable alternative for those who are anxious that promoting McCarthy would be seen in their home districts as more of the same insiders at a time when constituents appear to prefer outsiders. The Daily Signal reports, “This summer, Chaffetz used his authority to strip Rep. Mark Meadows, a House Freedom Caucus founder from North Carolina, of his subcommittee chairmanship for voting against a procedural motion”.
His congressional investigations have raised Chaffetz’s prominence but also drawn criticism. But he didn’t have much other praise for how the leadership has handled key items on the conservatives’ agenda. If they are, then they’re more forward-looking than I imagine. Will you punish conservatives or fix the House?
Chaffetz also hinted that he would be more willing to use the brinkmanship tactics favored by the most conservative Republicans. Even Webster, in testimony he gave in Tallahassee, said he probably could not win there as it is proposed.
“You have to believe that they never meant it”, says Kibbe, who is now a senior adviser to Concerned American Voters, a super political action committee for GOP presidential candidate and libertarian, Sen. “And that could be an ugly situation”, he said. Jim Jordan and Jeb Hensarling. “This new process will ensure House Republicans have a strong, unified team to lead our conference and focus on the American people’s priorities”. He said he had not planned to run for speaker but was recruited by Republicans – he would not name them – looking for a fresh face rather than a continuation of existing leadership. They want us to tackle the tough issues.
He traveled the state, and whether he spoke with a lowly company employee, a middle manager, or a business owner, they all said the same thing: “They are very disappointed in how we Republicans are doing in Washington“, says Rep. Fleming, a physician elected in 2008.
