Changes Announced for 2016 Red Sox Staff
But I can’t say it’s based upon anything I’ve observed because it’s not other than really come to the conclusion that I think that it’s the right thing to do from an organizational perspective. I’ve learned that being a major league manager is about timing. I’ve talked to a lot of people that I trust.
I would like to think things are better now than they were three years ago. “It was outlined in his exit physical that he comes in at a certain weight”, Lovullo told reporters prior to the Red Sox’ final game of the season.
“It’s obviously been a roller-coaster ride, where we’re in it, we’re not in it, we’re in it, back and forth”, he later added. “This is (Farrell’s) club”.
Because of his success with the Red Sox while Farrell was gone, Lovullo was expected to be a leading candidate for any managerial openings this winter. Still, Farrell has yet to officially receive that clean bill of health that would allow him to return to the helm.
John Farrell, who is battling, in his own words, “a highly curable” form of lymphoma, recently completed his third cycle of chemotherapy. But what happens if it’s six months? That’s where Lovullo comes in. “But I also want to make sure, how do we protect ourselves?”
Lovullo reportedly was extended and signed a deal that will keep him under contract through the 2017 campaign.
“My goal this year was trying to get double-digit wins and more than 200 strikeouts, which I feel like I did it”, Salazar said. “These are all very common conversations we have with guys”. Through that prism, Lovullo could identify what felt like the right course to take. I have a love for the organization.
The Red Sox had a chance to score in the sixth inning, when a walk and a single put runners at first and second with one out. He returned to Pawtucket as the team’s manager in 2011 and remained in the dugout at McCoy Stadium for two seasons. Given how early Farrell’s diagnosis was, there is a lot of hope and believe that he will be healthy and ready to manage once again in 2016. However, this still isn’t a ideal scenario, and there’s bound to be a few level of awkwardness between Farrell and Lovullo next season.
Lovullo recognizes that if the Sox start poorly next season, there will be rampant speculation that Farrell will be fired and replaced by Lovullo.
Dombrowski downplayed that dynamic.
I’m going with Salazar and little more… “It’s been a long time, Hopefully that’s all in the past”. Dombrowski largely maintained the status quo.
According to the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox asked both players to cut weight, and Ramirez to take reps at first base.
That’s nearly certainly true, just as it’s nearly certainly true that such a effect likely matters far less to Farrell and Lovullo than what they have gained on a personal, fundamental level through this decision.
