Bombers attack mosque, restaurant in Nigeria, 44 killed, 67 injured
Witnesses said that a woman suicide bomber blew up in the midst of a crowded evangelical Christian church service in northeast Nigeria on Sunday and killed at least five people.
Then, as people began to flee, a number of female suicide bombers started blowing themselves up in their midst, killing large numbers of people, he said. But Boko Haram has been tied to violence in Jos in the past, including an attack on a market in May 2014 that killed more than 100 people.
It has been claimed that bloodshed is increasing due to an Isis directive to intensify violence during the holy month of Ramadan.
Boko Haram has stepped up its attacks in northern Nigeria since the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, with a wave of raids, explosions and suicide bombings.
In Jos, 51 people died and were buried Monday morning, Muslim community lawyer Ahmed Garba told a news conference. Yahaya was unharmed, Sani added.
In a statement issued by the Senate President Media Office in Abuja, he urged Boko Haram insurgents to “stop wasting innocent lives and accept the olive branch as presented by the federal government”.
Another bomb exploded at Shagalinku, a restaurant popular with politicians.
Sabi’u Bako was picking up a takeout meal when he heard a massive explosion as he walked away with friends.
There are also 47 people being treated for injuries, but emergency officials are still gathering information, so the figures may rise. “We can’t believe that we escaped”.
The city of Jos is split between Nigeria’s Muslim majority from the north and the majority Christian population from the south, reported Buzz Feed.
Though no one has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack, the method, target and location are consistent with past attacks thought to be perpetrated by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram. A multinational force from Nigeria and its neighbours forced the militants out of many towns, but bombings and village attacks have increased in recent weeks.
