Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr

Attired in new clothes, men and children today visited Eidgahs and mosques for prayers. “After this we celebrate this day along with people of all religions in our house and everywhere”.

On the day of Eid, Muslims gather at mosques in the morning to perform the Eid prayer, before holding family gatherings and visiting friends. The Islamic Eid Al-Fitr holiday celebrates the conclusion of 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting.

“I’m just here for the weekend”, Munir, an electrical engineer, said.

The U.S President offered his “warm wishes” to all Muslims in a statement released on Thursday, wishing them “joy, prosperity and well-being [in the year to come]”. And in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, the celebrations began a day after security forces said they had killed six gunmen in two clashes, sparking fears of more violence.

“If you get to know your neighbor, getting along is easier”, said Atif Fareed, chairman of the American Muslim Community Centers of Longwood, which organized the event.
