Lampard, Gerrard among MLS stars to face Spurs

MLS Commissioner Don Garber elected to use his two “commissioner picks” on L.A.’s Steven Gerrard and NYC’s Frank Lampard, who haven’t even played an MLS games since arriving mid-season.

The riddle of how to successfully pair Gerrard and Lampard stumped a succession of England managers before the duo quit global football and opted to head to the MLS.

Gerrard made his competitive bow for Los Angeles Galaxy in the opening match of the worldwide Champions Cup on Saturday, while a calf strain delayed Lampard’s highly anticipated New York City debut against Toronto FC on Sunday.

The MLS All-Star team faces English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, July 29 at 9 p.m. ET, live on FOX Sports 1, UniMás, TSN and RDS.

Colorado Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni will choose the remainder of the roster for the match against Tottenham. The MLS All-Stars defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 a year ago after being beaten 3-1 by Roma in 2013.

Gonzalez is one of seven USA standouts that were voted to the Fan XI including: USA captain Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), DaMarcus Beasley (Houston Dynamo), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City) and Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake).

Orlando City’s Kaka and David Villa, Lampard’s team-mate at New York City, make the side for the first time after earning spots in the XI, which was revealed on Monday night. Seattle’s Obafemi Martins was chosen through a Federation Internationale de Football Association 15 campaign in which a vote was awarded for every video game goal the voter scored.
