Confirmed Killed In Damaturu Eid Prayer Ground Explosion – Army

A few hours after two suicide bombers triggered explosions in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, the Nigerian Army reacted to the incessant attacks by vowing the defeat of insurgent Islamist fighters in the country’s northeast zone.

The start of Eid can vary in different parts of the world, but Muslims in Nigeria this year observed the holiday on Friday, beginning with morning prayers and a small breakfast before gathering with family and friends for feasts and celebrations. “Both Yobe State Governor and the Chief of Army Staff, sympathise with and urged the people to stay calm and be security conscious”, Usman added.

It was believed that a teenage girl and an elderly woman carried out the two attacks at the screening area for the Eid prayers in Damaturu.

“How can anybody say only 10 people were killed?” Sources told Nigerian broadcast station Channels Television that scores were feared dead. So far, about 50 persons have been confirmed dead, and quite a number injured. “Perhaps, somebody from afar was trailing and monitoring their movements to see if they could make it into the prayer ground and when they probably saw that they would be checked they decided to detonate the bombs from a remote device”.

According to the source from the hospital in Damaturu, many casualties were brought in to the health facility.

Seven people were injured in the first explosion while eleven people were wounded in the second one.

The bombs went off about 8am at one of the Eid grounds located in an area called Phase-1 Secretariat along Damaturu-Maiduguri road. “Now we are being asked to return back home”.
