Lafayette Police: Shooter Legally Obtained Gun at Pawn Shop
The shooter, who ended his life as police descended upon the Lafayette, Louisiana theater, appears to have been a relatively active poster on Tea Party and other right-wing online forums, often using the nickname “Rusty Houser”, which the Daily Beast reports is tied to him by an email address listed on a LinkedIn page.
Investigators will re-enter the movie theater on Monday. Others reflected on the person Johnson was.
Houser, 59, shown in a photo provided by the Lafayette Police Department, was the gunman in a deadly shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana on July 23, 2015.
With the 2013 passage of legislation backed by the National Rifle Association, Alabama went from a “may issue” to a “shall issue” system for concealed carry permits, taking away some of sheriffs’ discretion.
Houser stood up in the theater where the comedy “Trainwreck” was showing and fired off one 10-round clip, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craig said at a press conference. They appealed to the public for help in learning more about the gunman. “It is apparent that he was intent on shooting and escaping”, he said, noting that Houser’s auto, a blue Lincoln Continental, was parked outside the theater near an exit.
In 2014, Houser lost his home to foreclosure.
Authorities say Houser was armed with a semi-automatic.40-caliber handgun and had one additional magazine.
Edmonson said, “To put a motive to it is just something that we simply can’t do right now”.
Seven people were wounded, three of them critically, authorities said. Despite this, new information has been released detailing where he was able to obtain the weapon. Meaux, who was shot in the leg, told her colleagues that Martin, who was shot in the kneecap, still managed to pull a fire alarm, their former principal Heath Hulin said. “People were screaming”.
“After that first shot … there was this very odd calm”, Mann, said. She wrote that she urged the mother to seek have him hospitalized again.
“I just grabbed her arm”, she said. Thank you all for your support and understanding.
The White House said the president’s “thoughts and prayers” were with the victims and their families.
Jillian Johnson, 33, died in hospital. He said early Friday that he had spoken with two teachers who had been in the theater together. One took a bullet for the other.
“They heard a couple of pops and didn’t know what it was”, said Randall Mann, whose 21-year-old daughter, Emily, was sitting in the same row as the shooter Thursday night.
Outside the theater, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Friday that “now is not the time” to discuss gun control, a position backed Saturday by rock musician and gun enthusiast Ted Nugent, who was in Lafayette for a sportsmen’s exposition and came by to lay some flowers. The officers immediately headed to the auditorium as the audience fled.
“Nothing that made me alarmed or that would signal that something like this would happen, I never saw that”, he said.
Kent said he understands why some people see more theater security as a possibility and that they hire security officers for special events, as well.
Houser s wife had a restraining order filed against him in 2008 and there are reports that he had a historic of psychological problems.
Back in 2008, a Georgia judge ruled that Houser was a danger to himself and others, before ordering that he take part in mental health treatment.
But Rem Houser, who lives in Atlanta, also noted they had not been in contact for 10 years, and last heard from his brother a month ago when he needed money.
Educated in accounting and law, he owned bars in Georgia – including one where he flew a Nazi banner out front as an anti-government statement.
