Monsoon rains kill more than 100 in India
The BBC said that a cyclone struck the state of West Bengal, killing 48 people in flood-related incidents, with over 200,000 people have moved to relief camps.
The CM had on Sunday day held a meeting with senior officials regarding the situation and has set up a control room at the state secretariat to keep an eye on the problem.
In neighboring Pakistan, the number of casualties from three weeks of flooding has already exceeded 100, and authorities fear the number could rise ever further in the coming days.
Almost four million people in 10,000 villages have been affected by the floods in the worst-affected Indian state of West Bengal, the home ministry said.
“Raining has stopped in Odisha, but the rivers have been deluged by rain water inflow from West Bengal”, Odisha’s deputy relief commissioner PR Mohapatra said. One team member from the National Disaster Response Force was airlifted into the area for rescue and relief operations.
But he said waters were now receding, allowing power and communications to be restored. Rescuers reached the crushed village, 80 km from state capital Imphal, after being flown by helicopter and then trekking across blocked roads. Flood waters will cause more rivers here to swell. There was flood water in Imphal West district areas as well as Uripok, Sagolband, Lamphel, a few portion of Kwairamban Bazar on Sunday, sources at IFCD said.
But the rains often cause damage affecting millions of people, devastating crops, destroying homes and sparking outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhoea.
Photos showed a bridge washed away by floodwaters in Manipur after days of torrential rain, while TV stations showed footage of a house collapsing and families sleeping in makeshift evacuation centers.
Nearby Myanmar has attributed almost four dozen deaths to the heavy rainfall, while Pakistan has seen its death toll climb to 116.
Rajasthan has experienced excessive rainfall in most of its districts over the past week and the situation is described as ” grim” by officials.
“The dying clang has found 53 considering that July 26 along with 23 losses in the worst-affected Banaskantha locality alone”, the genuine said. In many states food packets have also been airdropped to flood victims, he added.
