Obama, Netanyahu make dueling appeals on Iran to US Jews
That is a fantasy.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the chief American negotiator in the Iran nuclear talks, sought to assure Middle East allies Sunday that the deal would make them safer, as he began a regional tour in Egypt and later flew to Qatar.
“Congress faces a solemn charge that I expect will be fulfilled to the best of our abilities and at the highest of standards beginning today”.
“In our deliberations, we need to ensure the negotiations resulted in a comprehensive, long-lasting, and verifiable outcome that also provides for snap-back of sanctions should Iran deviate from its commitments”.
In their deliberation over whether or not to support the nuclear deal, the US Congress needs to think carefully about the implications of what will happen if it kills the deal and understand how killing the deal will nearly certainly create a far more unsafe situation.
The accord negotiated by the U.S. and five other world powers with Iran has put new strains on an already contentious relationship between Obama and Netanyahu.
“The Administration signed off on an agreement that included a series of Iranian Eastern eggs, including secret deals regarding the possible military dimensions of Tehran’s nuclear program, to which Congress and the public are not privy”.
Tuesday, he took another step, with a direct appeal to American Jews asking them to oppose the deal in an unprecedented conference call and webcast heard by more than 10,000 people.
“When he announced his nuclear deal with Iran on July 14, President Obama said, ‘This deal is not built on trust, it is built on verification, ‘” two Republican Congressmen wrote.
“Surely there was an alternative besides this risky agreement and war“, Roskam said in a statement.
While Roskam believes he has the votes needed to disapprove of the deal, he does not yet have enough support to override a veto of that disapproval.
An official of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (ICCIMA) says senior executives of Italy’s oil giant, ENI, will arrive in Tehran as part of a business delegation on Tuesday.
But “should those conversations progress to any transactions or other activities that are still sanctionable prior to implementation day, then we’ll continue to fully implement and enforce our sanctions“, he added.
Congress needs a two-thirds majority in each house to override a presidential veto. In exchange, the U.S., European Union and United Nations agreed to lift economic sanctions on Iran.
