Apple Music Has 11 Million Trial Users
In a statement to USA Today, Apple has officially announced it has signed up 11 million members to Apple Music since launch.
“For many people outside of the U.S., you still have to explain what it is and how it works”, says music industry mogul Jimmy Iovine, who is “pleasantly shocked” by the uptake after Apple bought out Beats and turned his streaming service into Apple Music.
Similar platforms such as Google Play Music and Rdio have opted not to divulge their own stats.
All Apple Music subscribers are still on the free three month trial. Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue has just provided the answer.
“We’re thrilled with the numbers so far”, said Cue. The very fact that the company is willing to spill such precise figures is a testament to that – the company is renowned for being vague when its numbers aren’t too hot.
It also confirmed that 2 million people have signed up for the family plan, which offers accounts for up to six users at a discounted price.
By way of comparison, streaming music leader Spotify has around 80 million users around the world – 20 million of which pay – the rest are on the free ad-supported tier.
If Apple Music can keep growing on the same trajectory, the service could quickly eclipse competitors. There have been reports of bugs and issues with the service since release, including duplicate playlists and track mislabeling.
