Bush Will Defund Planned Parenthood: Trump Wants Govt. Shut Down if Planned
Former Governor Jeb Bush is racing to walk back remarks he made late Tuesday when he said the government shouldn’t spend half a billion dollars on women’s health.
“I would like to ask him, ‘Gov. Was her health not worth the money?” “Tell it to the teenager who avoided an unintended pregnancy because she had access to contraception”.
Bush’s appearance at the Urban League meeting was aimed at furthering his outreach to minority voters, and after Clinton’s on-stage critique, Bush spokesman Tim Miller tweeted, “The DNC and Hillary scramble to attack Jeb today and misrepresent his record betrays their fear of his ability to broaden GOP support”. The episode, along with Bush’s persistently weak favorability ratings, could give opponents an opening to undermine his image as the field’s most electable alternative to Donald Trump.
He and Hillary Clinton had a Twitter fight over it, too.
“Four Trump allies and one Clinton associate familiar with the exchange said that Clinton encouraged Trump’s efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party and offered his own views of the political landscape.”
Democrats acknowledge there is an advantage to a Bush nomination.
Bush travels to Nashville for a live interview before thousands of members of the Southern Baptist Convention, which will also show a pre-recorded interview with Rubio. She commended his dedication to women’s services and health issues.
“With regards to women’s health funding broadly, I believe there are countless community health centers, rural clinics, and other women’s health organizations that need to be fully funded”.
The Senate on Monday voted 53-46 to advance a GOP-backed bill terminating Planned Parenthood’s federal funding, seven short of the 60 votes needed to keep the measure moving toward passage. But it does show that the campaign agenda isn’t in the candidates’ hands, and I’m sure there’s someone working for him who suspects that this could be a problem if he becomes the Republican nominee.
Democrats wasted no time pouncing, grateful to go on the offense about health issues after spending weeks dogged by Planned Parenthood sting videos.
Bush acknowledges that “there is no rational plan to deport millions of people that the American people would support”, a reference to the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in this country, the expulsion of whom is impractical. The campaign said the first version was a draft. “Grants are awarded to both states and nongovernmental organizations that demonstrate strong capacity to provide high-quality family planning and other preventive health care, with priority given to low-income and underinsured women and men”, said Clare Coleman, President & CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association.
By saying they want to defund the women’s health organization, Republicans are setting up a false dichotomy between Planned Parenthood and community health centers.
