Until Mr. Trump strode on stage, discussing the extent of alien crime was mostly forbidden territory. He knew darn well that taking on the likes of McCain would keep his campaign on an upward trajectory, as conservative voters, increasingly exhausted of bland candidates and inactive leaders in Washington, search for someone who can stand up to the so-called GOP establishment and elite media. Given that the party has been shut out of the White House for eight years, and the odds (electorally) are not exactly in their favor in 2016, the exchange of bold ideas in a drawn-out primary is exactly what is needed. Unfortunately, a look at most other Republican hopefuls leaves us thinking, “This is about as appetizing as a three day old salad”. Whether those actions are the cause of Trump’s slide isn’t clear, but they do coincide with it. “They worked hard, there was no problem”, he said. If they disagree with Trump, they’ll pit themselves against the Republican base – and face pressure to explain what they’d do instead. Bob Dole and John McCain were pathetic.

The lesson is to embrace primaries. And they’d also be destroying any chance of Latino support in the general election in 2016.

Trump expressed his disdain for politicians who constantly debate. Trump would be a flash in the pan, and then we could all go back to contemplating the Republican candidates who easily met the inside-the-Beltway crowd’s measure of being “Very Serious People”. “They’re looking for a voice, and he happens to be here at the right time“. There were flames – his candidacy caught fire. He will take care of businesses at the expense of American workers.

Is it because he can’t be bought? As some of the other candidates run out of money (or out of steam), Trump could actually pick up voters from them. Perot came across as a flake, and Romney was perhaps the most out-of-touch candidate in memory.

The American political class has failed the country, and should be fired. And that it is finally time to run the federal government like a business, instilling accountability and tightening the belt, just as families and businesses do? Movements such as #BlackLivesMatter as well as organized labor need to join hands with immigrant rights forces in pointing out the hypocrisy and blatant racism contained in Trump’s efforts. Partly. But Ronald Reagan had at least served as the governor of California – more political experience than Donald Trump could ever claim. Donald Trump triumphs on the stump so far, but do voters REALLY want him? Trump understands that you can’t be all things to all people, and that by being himself, he will win over hearts and minds.

Trump has recently made a number of controversial remarks, such as comments about 2008 GOP presidential candidate John McCain’s service in the U.S. war with Vietnam. And what a breath of fresh air that would be. For the couple of months that Ross Perot quit the presidential race in the summer of 1992, Clinton actually increased his lead over President Bush. Since we’re charting the boundaries between the thinkable and the unthinkable anyway, it would not be entirely out of the question for Bush to mount his own third-party bid for the presidency, to take Trump on directly. No matter how much it might terrify the Republican Party establishment, “Donald Trump, GOP nominee” is now a distinct possibility.
