Oklahoma Senator Says Fight To Defund Planned Parenthood Not Over
“Any review of the policy that Planned Parenthood says they implement indicates the views expressed in the videos, or at least the way they’re pictured on the videos is entirely inaccurate”, he added.
Yesterday, the Senate failed to pass a measure to strip Planned Parenthood of its $500-million plus in federal funding but Republicans have vowed to bring up the matter after the August break.
“Selling baby body parts is the furthest thing imaginable from providing women’s healthcare, and this organization’s repeated and systematic disrespect for human life is appalling”, Abbott said.
The anti-abortion Center for Medical Progress has released four videos in which people posing as representatives of a company that purchases fetal tissue converse with Planned Parenthood officials. However, Democrats have already said they would veto any bill that includes such a rider, which would ultimately lead to a shutdown.
The viral videos have centered on the donation of fetal tissue for scientific research, which the videos have tried to suggest is done at a profit for Planned Parenthood.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, used a parliamentary tactic to preserve the chance for a do-over vote sometime in the future, though it’s unlikely, barring another major revelation, that enough Democrats would abandon their support for Planned Parenthood, which has become synonymous with the pro-choice debate.
“All funds no longer available to Planned Parenthood will continue to be made available to other eligible entities”, the Jolly bill says. The videos have sparked outrage in anti-abortion circles with conservatives and, notably Republican presidential candidates, jumping on the call to defund the group. Supporters of Planned Parenthood argued that the federal money does not pay for abortions – except in limited cases like those involving rape and incest – and that it reimburses Planned Parenthood only for services like birth control, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, cancer screening and preventive exams…. “I don’t know how the American people can put up with that”.
There are so many adjectives that come to mind to describe those in the video who threw Planned Parenthood under the bus, but we have to remember that they do not speak for the entire organization, which has done as much for women’s health than any other organization in this country.
Planned Parenthood denies the charge. However, U.S. law prohibits the use of federal funds to perform abortions.
The move comes a day after Jindal canceled Planned Parenthood’s participation in the state Medicaid program where it provides health care services at facilities in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
