Cruz Stays Above Fray in Combative First Debate
“Whether it’s the first one, two, three states, you’ve got to win an early state”.
The Texas senator and Tea Party favourite was the first to throw his hat into the ring on March 23.
“Any man who will walk into the legislature carrying a squealing pig is a man who understands the legislative process”, said Cruz, referring to a stunt Sanford carried out while governor. His stance on many issues may not appeal to some moderate Republicans that attended tonight’s town hall, but they say seeing him here meant a lot to them in the end.
Like many candidates, Cruz did a video for the Circle of Protection, a group of 100 Christian leaders working against global poverty. “Yet other candidates may go into the debate hoping to sail above the fray”.
But Cruz was asked few questions and never jumped out of turn to criticize his opponents, which earned him tepid reviews from most political writers and pundits.
“Believing is not simply sitting aside and doing a polite little golf clap”, Cruz told the congregation at his friend Robert Jeffress’ congregation, First Baptist Dallas. His colleague Robert Costa wrote “Cruz didn’t wow” and “his skirmishes with Senate GOP leaders don’t have the same aura of excitement they once did”.
If leading Democratic candidate Clinton were to become president, Iran would get nuclear weapons, Cruz said.
Politico said Cruz wasbooed off the stage for calling for absolute support for Israel, accusing those who disagreed of being “consumed with hate” and concluding, “If you will not stand with Israel and the Jews, then I will not stand with you”.
But Cruz seemed to have struck the right chord with Beck’s followers, who praised Cruz in the comments section of that post.
Ted Cruz was a king in Parliamentary Debate Land. Mo Brooks of Alabama and Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma, who has already endorsed Cruz for president.
Speaking to the RedState Gathering in Atlanta, the firebrand senator cast himself as the only true candidate in a race with people playing the part of “campaign conservatives”.
