Thousands of people gathered here on Wednesday awaiting the body of former president A.P.J. In their message they described him as a “People’s President” who achieved critical milestones in augmenting India’s defence sector.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, aged 83, was wheeled into the Bethany Hospital’s ICU in a critical condition, after he collapsed due to a massive cardiac arrest, during a lecture to the students at the IIM in India’s northeastern city of Shillong, The Time reported.

Advantage India, a book that throws light on the country’s opportunities and the key challenges in the next five years, will be the last bequest to the nation by APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr Kalam came to be known as the “Missile Man of India” for his work on the development and successful testing of Ballistic missiles.

On Tuesday, President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders cutting across political divide led the nation in paying homage to a leader who rose from humble origins to occupy the top office.

“The prime minister is going to attend the last rites”, Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told the media when asked if he would be attending the last rites of the former “people’s-President”.

From the airport, Mr Kalam’s body was taken in a gun carriage to his residence at 10, Rajaji Marg here where people paid homage to him. “His invaluable contribution to India’s rise in the sphere of science and technology would be remembered forever by all”, she said. Initially kalam was started his career as scientist and slowly turned in to politics and payed his efforts to give best to the country with honest and encouragement.

China also paid rich tributes to former President APJ Abdul Kalam, terming him an influential Indian politician and active promoter of Sino-Indian friendship.

The Union cabinet will hold a special meeting in New Delhi to condole Kalam’s death. Dr Kalam received several prestigious awards, including India’s highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna.
