Police Shoot Suspect in Ferguson on Michael Brown Anniversary
The shootings come as the St. Louis suburb marks the anniversary of the killing of Brown, a black 18-year-old, by a white Ferguson police officer.
Protestors gathered Sunday for a peaceful vigil but dispersed after police were fired upon by what authorities are saying was just one man, who has been identified as 18-year-old Tyrone Harris. The officers returned fire, and chased the man on foot.
The officers, who have between 6 and 12 years experience on the police force, were all placed on administrative leave while an investigation gets underway. The alleged assailant was then struck and fell.
Belmar said the suspect is in surgery in “critical … unstable condition”.
No officers were injured, the department said. They were not wearing body cameras.
According to the probable cause statement, the detectives saw Harris running across West Florissant firing a handgun while gunfire was being exchanged between two groups of people around 11:20 p.m.
The looting and violence were condemned by both St. Louis County police chief Jon Belmar and St. Louis alderman Antonio French, who has been a prominent figure at protest events since Brown’s death. Wilson, who resigned last year, was never charged in Brown’s death.
“Violence has no place in our streets and we should all be working for peace and justice there and everywhere in our country”, the Democrat said. “There are a lot of emotions”.
Protesters yell at a police line shortly before shots were fired in Ferguson, Mo., on Sunday.
One officer was treated for cuts related to a brick thrown at his face, Belmar said. They told police they were walking by the Michael Brown memorial when an unknown gunman shot at them from the backseat of a auto.
Earlier in the evening, two businesses were broken into. Police with riot gear then arrived. The household of Tyrone Harris Jr. informed the tv station that their son was a good friend of Michael Brown’s and had simply graduated from Normandy Excessive Faculty. One 20-year-old man was hospitalized after being shot by police.
The death of Brown and a grand jury’s decision to spare the officer, Darren Wilson, from criminal charges led to a wave of demonstrations that boiled over into rioting and arson at times and spawned sympathy rallies across the United States. Waller County authorities say the 28-year-old Black woman died of an apparent suicide by hanging, though family and a concerned community believe otherwise. “I still look at it – yeah I lost – but he’s still working right now”.
On Monday, protesters took part in what they are calling “Moral Monday”, which was a day of planned civil disobedience.
