The Olympics Are Heading Back To Beijing

Bach congratulated Beijing on winning the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, and expressed his confidence on a successful delivery of the Games.

Beijing has been selected to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first city awarded both the winter and summer games.

This time it had been the strong favourite, presenting itself as a safe pair of hands against underdog Almaty.

“We have the confidence, the ability and the conditions to put on a secure, vibrant and joyful Winter Olympics for the world”, it said in an editorial.

Beijing narrowly defeated Almaty, Kazakhstan, in a vote of the global Olympic Committee.

Liu Yandong also attended a reception in Kuala Lumpur’s Shangri-La Hotel to celebrate Beijing’s win.

“By bidding for the Winter Games we showed the world the fantastic progress that Kazakhstan has made since its independence”, said Andrey Kryukov, the vice chairman of Almaty’s bid team.

After the first vote, results of which were not disclosed, was declared closed, IOC director general Christophe De Kepper told the delegates that there had been “interferences with changes of tablets” and that scrutineers “are not comfortable with the integrity of the vote”. The voting reflects how the committee also was conflicted about returning the Olympics to a location that held the Olympics once before.

According to The Guardian, Beijing’s achievement was not an easy win for the city.

The voting process didn’t go as smoothly as it could have, however, CTV reports.

He said IOC voters had been impressed by the final presentation by Kazakh prime minister Karim Massimov.

It’s an historic vote, as it makes Beijing the first city to host a Summer and Winter Games.

The worldwide Olympic Committee steered clear of financial risks and decided to award the 2022 Winter Games to Beijing, capital of the world’s second-biggest economy, instead of Almaty, Kazakhstan, which argued it could offer a more natural and authentic cold-weather sporting event.

Performers organised by the government, many in matching white outfits, danced and waved Chinese flags in front of the Bird’s Nest, the centrepiece for the 2008 Summer Olympics. But the snow and sliding events would be at venues in Yangqing and Zhangjiakou, 60 and 140 km outside Beijing. Beijing will host indoor and non-snow events, while nearby Zhangjiakou in Hebei province will host skiing and other outdoor sports.

“I will be able to come to Beijing in just 50 minutes after the launch of the high speed rail between Chongli and Beijing”, she added. Traditionally, the Olympic Games are not held twice in a row on the same continent.

The four European candidates who originally entered the 2022 race all dropped out, citing concerns about the escalating costs of staging the Olympics, prompting the IOC to introduce a raft of reforms to cut costs and attract more bidders in the future.

“One thing I can say is Almaty was ready to host the 2022 Winter Games”, he said.
