Ferguson anniversary: Video ‘shows suspect with gun’
Stenger commended the efforts of the county police, along with the contributions from Ferguson and other departments, for minimizing tensions Monday night.
Protest groups were quick to criticize the police response to protesters who gathered along West Florissant Avenue on Sunday night. Larry Miller, who organized the protest group Ferguson Freedom Fighters, told AP that the latest round of protests is dying down without accomplishing much.
“I certainly don’t want to see the state of emergency any longer than it needs to be”, the county executive, Steve Stenger, said.
Brown’s death and similar police killings that followed in Baltimore; North Charleston, South Carolina; Cincinnati; and Arlington, Texas, sparked a year of protests and debate across the United States about race, justice and law enforcement’s use of force. He is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
A video has been released by St Louis County police showing what they say is a suspect, who has been accused of firing on police, drawing a pistol from his trousers during protests in strife-torn Ferguson, Missouri.
New surveillance video released by police in Missouri Tuesday shows a man charged in an officer-involved shooting pointing a gun toward police.
Several members of the Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government activist group largely made up of past and present military personnel, first responders and law enforcement personnel, showed up along West Florissant Avenue late Tuesday.
Harris was in critical condition on Monday at a St. Louis hospital. Some chanted, holding signs, however, police officers wearing riot gear appeared to outnumber protesters.
The move authorized county Police Chief Jon Belmar to take control of police emergency management in and around Ferguson. Police issued the warning after a man allegedly fired shots at officers Sunday night in Ferguson. Protests that began Friday night were marred by clashes between demonstrators and police as people hurled bottles and rocks at authorities.
Harris’ father, who disputed the police account Monday, told The Associated Press by telephone Wednesday that he expects his son to survive.
“My son was running to the police to ask for help, and he was shot”, he said.
According to St. Louis city court records, the younger Harris was free on bail awaiting trial on charges of stealing a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm and resisting arrest.
That led to a foot chase, the police said, which ended with Harris bloodied and face-down on the pavement of a parking lot.
Oath Keepers members previously showed up in Ferguson in November after a grand jury declined to indict Wilson in Brown’s death, saying they stationed themselves along several downtown rooftops to protect businesses from rioters and looters.
