Stephen Harper says most Canadians agree with him, don’t want marijuana legalized
Harper made his first pitch to British Columbia voters Tuesday at a rally in a crowded hotel room in Richmond.
Harper, a member of the Conservative Party who is seeking re-election, argues that almost 15 percent of condos purchased in Vancouver are not being lived in. “The Harper government seemed completely uninterested in this until today – he’s had 10 years to do something about this and did nothing”.
The association pointed to the plan’s success in helping 2.8 million Canadians attain home ownership since 1992, but added that a hike is needed to maintain the value of the withdrawal limit against inflation.
“A re-elected Conservative government will commit to collecting comprehensive data on the foreign non-resident purchase of Canadian real estate”, Harper said Wednesday.
Strategic voting is a possibility since the government removed laws that prohibited the broadcasting of election results until polls closed on the West Coast.
Harper suggested that the Tories were ready to work with the provinces to make sure that foreign, non-resident investors only buy homes that ensures the “availability and affordability of homes for Canadians”.
This 11-week campaign allows parties to spend more than $50 million, which thanks to the campaign rebate system, will be subsidized by up to 50 per cent by taxpayers.
The 15-per-cent reference looks at vacancy rates in all of downtown Vancouver, but Yan drilled down even further.
In making the announcement, Harper said “cracking down on illegal drug use and prescription drug abuse is a priority for our government”. “The second will be some sort of tax on foreign real estate investment, or outright ban or restrictions on foreign investment like in Australia”. But no matter the anecdotal popularity of the theory that offshore owners are behind the so-called ghost towers quietly gathering dust in Vancouver, Yan says nobody can yet prove anything either way.
With this week’s return of Mike Duffy promising another barrage of banner headlines and awkward campaign-trail questions, Harper struck a defiant tone as he defended putting Canada front and centre in the global fight against militants in Iraq and Syria. The city is also trying to collect data on how many empty homes are owned by foreign buyers. The Conservatives also abolished the Long Form Census in 2010, a decision decried by statisticians and provincial governments. He says he did not tell the Prime Minister of a plan that would have seen the Conservative Party foot the bill for Duffy’s questionable expense filings. However, after virtually a decade in energy, Harper now faces a brand new dynamic: the decision for change.
“These types of policies are definitely encouraging homeownership, but we’re encouraging it at a time when there is clear evidence that the market is overvalued and therefore there’s a much greater than normal risk of a correction at some point”, Mr. Madani said.
