Fernandez homers in comeback to help Miami beat Giants, 5
The Miami Marlins’ slugging first baseman devoured Giants pitching in this three-game series, and took a big bite out of Matt Cain in the right-hander’s long-awaited return to the big leagues on Thursday. Bour’s three-run homer off of Matt Cain in the fifth inning jumped the Marlins from a 3-2 deficit to a 5-3 lead.
Play of The Game: Justin Bour hit a three run home run in the fifth. Bour’s been on a tear recently, having homered in three straight games and driven in seven over that same time span. He’s hitting a healthy.263/.340/.496 this season, though the return of Michael Morse figures to at least somewhat chip into his at-bats.
The first two batters to face Fernandez scored, but he soon found the form that made him the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year. In that start Fernandez went five innings and allowed four runs in the club’s 4-1 loss to the Biloxi Shuckers.
Yes, people may have forgotten that while he’s a pitcher, he’s not too bad with that piece of wood in his hands.
The crowd of 32,598 roared with every strike from Fernandez.
Fernandez led off the inning by belting his second career home run, taking advantage of a 91 miles per hour fastball over the middle to get the Marlins within 3-2.
Credit to Fernandez, even though he wasn’t at his absolute best on the mound, he figured out a way to make #JoseDay a home run.
The Marlins welcomed the return of their ace, but Yelich discounted the notion of the team getting an emotion lift from the Cuban refugee’s effusive personality. “You don’t expect to score a lot of runs off him”.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about how life had given me another chance to be on the mound and do what I love”, he said. Kid K struggled with his fastball command throughout the inning, especially against left-handers Gregor Blanco and Joe Panik. He then jammed Brandon Belt, who managed to bloop a run-scoring hit to shallow left just out of reach of infielders Adeiny Hechavarria and Miguel Rojas.
He said his arm felt fine after the game.
Major league home run leader Giancarlo Stanton has moved back into position to start in next month’s All-Star game.
“I wish I could pitch tomorrow”, he said. Giants RHP Jake Peavy, who hasn’t pitched since April 18 due to a back strain, will come off the disabled list on Friday at Washington…. He’s been placed on the disabled list for 15 days but is expected to be sidelined between four and six weeks. Lincecum bruised his right forearm when hit by a line drive Saturday. OF Angel Pagan, who has been bothered by a swollen knee, was held out of the starting lineup on his 34th birthday.
Marlins: Slugger Giancarlo Stanton was in uniform and in the dugout, his broken left hand in a cast.
