The Guardian reveals documents that hint at Apple’s self-driving auto project
Apple reportedly expressed its interest over a facility that has been used constantly for self-driving cars.
In other word, it’s an ideal place for a secrecy-driven company like Apple to test a vehicle. GoMentum is a former naval base that is now in the process of a redesign that would allow it to be ground zero for testing of self-driving cars, a “highly secure testing ground”, as USA Today described it in a separate report.
As recently as May, a program manager at GoMentum Station told an Apple engineer in an email that the facility was working “to keep everything moving and to meet your testing schedule”.
Rumors have been swirling for months that Apple is working on its own self-driving electric vehicle. Best part about the facility is it’s guarded by the military, so any Apple fanboys looking to get a peak at Jony’s vehicle design will be thwarted at all attempts.
On Friday, The Guardian published a report saying they had obtained documents that confirmed the tech giant was scouting for testing sites.
Project Titan has been widely speculated about for quite some time, but the correspondence provides the first documented evidence of its existence. The GoMentum Station in Concord, California used to be a 2,100-acre naval base offering 20-mile paved highways along with city streets.
But none of the emails show that Apple wanted to use the site for self-driving cars. Vehicle manufacturers like Honda and Mercedes-Benz have already carried out tests of driver-less cars at this facility. Company representatives have not yet visited, he added. However, Apple has denied commenting on the report.
According to the Guardian Frank also asked the facility officials how the layout of the area will help in testing cars. Analysts say Apple has the financial wherewithal and ambition to pursue such a project, although some believe it is more likely to be interested in developing software for use in cars made by other companies.
It is unclear when the company will officially announce their intentions to build an autonomous vehicle, but it appears clear that they are certainly hard at work on “Project Titan“.
