Police release video showing moments before Ferguson shooting
St. Louis County Police via Yout This video allegedly shows 18-year-old Tyrone Harris drawing a handgun after hearing shots fired during protests in Ferguson, Mo. on Sunday.
Brown’s death and similar police killings that followed in Baltimore; North Charleston, South Carolina; Cincinnati; and Arlington, Texas, sparked a year of protests and debate across the United States about race, justice and law enforcement’s use of force. He told reporters that “there’s a lot more to this than what’s being said”. By 1 a.m., the crowd and police were heading home. Brian Schellman says officers made no arrests during the protest.
Pamela Meanes, the former president of the National Bar Association, also described “tension” in Ferguson following the shooting and resisted the mainstream media narrative of the violence in the city.
The St. Louis County executive declared a state of emergency Monday, a move that gave Belmar – instead of interim Ferguson Police Chief Andre Anderson – control of security.
Early on Monday evening, hundreds of protesters were chanting, beating drums and carrying signs.
During a demonstration a night earlier, some protesters threw rocks and frozen water bottles at officers.
“We don’t want to lose all that we’ve gained”, said County Executive Steve Stenger.
Among the crowd were a handful of heavily armed members of an organization called the Oath Keepers.
Later during afternoon rush hour, more than 60 others were arrested for blocking lanes of Interstate 70 in St. Louis County, a few miles west of Ferguson. He said Tuesday that if the situation in Ferguson calms down further, he may lift the state of emergency order.
St. Louis County police Wednesday reported making no arrests during street protests in Ferguson the night before. Police identified that man as Harris. He is accused of firing into an unmarked police van.
Police in Missouri have released a video that appears to show a black teenager brandishing a gun before he was shot and badly wounded by officers.
No officers were injured, and those involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. He is now in critical condition.
During his statement on Monday, Stenger said “the recent acts of violence will not be tolerated in a community that has worked so tirelessly over the last year to rebuild and become stronger”. The suspect again fired on the officers when he became trapped in a fenced-in area, Belmar said, and all four opened fire.
Harris’ father disputed the police account Monday but declined to discuss his son’s shooting Tuesday. They said he had been drawn into a dispute involving two groups of young people and was “running for his life” after the gunfire broke out.
Police say they wouldn’t normally release the video but they hope it will ease doubts, like those expressed by Harris’ parents.
