Perhaps the two major frontrunners for the White House – Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump – made an appearance at the annual event Saturday, about five months before votes are cast in the state’s influential caucuses. This weekend, the Iowa State Fair is teeming with presidential hopefuls giving speeches atop a hay bale, stuffing their faces with greasy, fried foods, and enjoying carnival rides. After questions about her campaign and her private email server she spent more than an hour passing through the fairgrounds, pushing past throngs of people with her Secret Service detail to tour the signature butter cow and this year’s special fat sculpture: a carving of Rich Uncle Pennybags, the top-hatted mascot of the game Monopoly. The Republican frontrunner swooped into the fairgrounds on Saturday to crowds of adoring fans, boasting his following beat Hillary Clinton’s by a factor of 10, POLITICO reported. He forgot his helicopter.

On defeating Islamic State militants, Trump said the key is to take away their wealth by taking back the oil fields under their control in Iraq.
Noting that Iowa is “very important” to his campaign and that he’s pleased to be leading in the polls, Trump pointed out that that every supposedly fatal controversy after his brash comments about Mexican immigrants, John McCain’s heroism and Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, has only boosted his poll numbers. For what seemed like 20 minutes the fair came to a stand-still, with a long line of tractors, golf carts, and passersby unable to proceed down the main thoroughfare, as the crowd looking for a glimpse of the candidate froze the street.
Approaching Trump, Tranmer said she was surrounded by fellow Trump admirers, who repeatedly said they wanted someone different with his kind of background. Moments later, he avowed that he’d be willing to spend $1 billion on his campaign “if I had to”. “If I had to”. So far he has not released any specific policy proposals.
At the fundraiser, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has drawn large crowds in the state and around the country, and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who is planning a major push into the state. “You can hire a politician who doesn’t really know business, but if you hire a businessman, you can teach him the politics”.
There are a few golden rules when it comes to campaigning in Iowa: never arrive by helicopter, leave your entourage at home and don’t skip the Des Moines Register soapbox, even if you have to courageous hecklers.
