Michael Brown Protests: Peaceful Night In Ferguson After Violence; 2 Arrested
“The recent acts of violence will not be tolerated in a community that has worked so tirelessly over the last year to rebuild and become stronger”, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said in a statement.
St. Louis County Police say no arrests were made after a group of protesters returned to West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson.
A state of emergency was declared by the authorities in Ferguson, Missouri, on Monday so that a repeat of the violence that erupted during protests overnight could be prevented.
Police said that while there were some protests on Tuesday night, they were mostly peaceful and that there were no arrests.
Oath Keepers previously showed up in Ferguson in November after a grand jury declined to indict former Ferguson officer Darren Wilson in Brown’s death, saying they stationed themselves along several downtown rooftops to protect businesses from rioting and looters.
Prosecutors have filed 10 charges against Tyrone Harris, including assaulting an officer. Other nights drew hundreds of people, and one protest earlier in the week was disrupted by gunfire.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit civil rights organisation, has described the “Oath Keepers” as a “fiercely anti-government, militaristic group”.
Harris remains hospitalized in critical condition. “But, in fact, we’re probably not at the brink of the world and the United States doesn’t need help from Stuart Rhodes”, Potok said.
Late Tuesday night, a handful of members arrived. “They start shooting at the friends, and he just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time”, Harris’ father, Tyrone Harris Sr., told CNN affiliate KMOV.
As activists and citizens mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, an armed paramilitary group called the Oath Keepers is on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri once again.
St. Louis County police have released surveillance video footage they say shows the 18-year-old black suspect who was critically wounded after being shot by police in Ferguson minutes before he fired a gun at plainclothes officers.
“They’re not going to take the street tonight”, Belmar told an Associated Press reporter standing nearby.
But Stenger said things went smoothly enough on Monday, adding that there were “no shootings, no shots fired, no burglaries, no lootings and really no property damage”. Police used smoke to disperse the crowd.
Harris’ family maintained before the release of the video that he may not have had a weapon, and he was running away from the gunfire like many other people in the area.
She said she “did not see a single person come out of that jail last night – and I sat there for 12 and half hours – that didn’t have cuts, bruises, abrasions, something”.
