Club president arrives in London to negotiate striker transfer with Arsenal
Signing a new deal before he was sent on loan to Villarreal in January was perhaps a sign that the door wasn’t being closed completely on Joel Campbell’s Arsenal future.
Campbell has struggled to make an impact with the Gunners, but impressed during his season-long loan stint with Olympiacos during the 2013/14 season, helping the Greek giants win the domestic title.
Arsene Wenger has continuously backed Campbell to stay and prove himself at the Emirates, but it may now be the time to let him leave with first team chances at a premium.
Palermo are now interested in taking him to Serie A as they look for a replacement for the highly-rated young Argentine striker Paulo Dybala, who joined champions Juventus this summer.
However, the Italian club’s president, Zamparini, has now accused Arsenal of refusing to budge on their valuation and the deal is on the verge of collapsing.
Would you like to see Joel Campbell remain at Arsenal?
It’s clear his best position is at centre-forward but with little chance of overtaking Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott or Danny Welbeck in the pecking order, his best option is to seek a permanent move elsewhere.
