Valley voters weigh in on the term ‘anchor babies’
“Are you aware that the term ‘anchor baby, ‘ that’s an offensive term?”
But the juggernaut Donald Trump campaign that seemed to come out of nowhere quickly eclipsed Jeb Bush and the entire 17-member field of Republican candidates. “They’re doing that by buying politicians who are willing to support their agenda, including Rob Portman”, Strickland said. “Once we get the name issue resolved, we need to work on Jeb’s charisma, or lack thereof”. Jeb said he was just using a commonly accepted phrase and not embracing it.
For most of his speech, even Bush’s most impassioned lines were met with only applause during an event that has the feel of a rock concert, complete with pyrotechnics during the National Anthem and a Olympic-style torch inside the convention hall. According to one friend, Trump blames Bush and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim for Univision’s decision in June to cancel a $13.5 million contract with Trump to televise his Miss USA pageant.
Republican presidential candidates Donal Trump and Jeb Bush are in hot water after using the term “anchor baby” to describe American born children of undocumented immigrants.
Bush’s wife was born in Mexico and he has said in the past that people entering the country illegally do so as an “act of love” for their families.
Jeb Bush, as he often notes, co-wrote a book two years ago called “Immigration Wars”, laying out a path to reforming America’s immigration system.
The term anchor baby has gone from fringe to the spotlight, dominating political conversation on the 2016 presidential campaign trail this week.
As Trump tweeted, the previous Florida governor is certainly affiliated with a gaggle that has suggested Republicans to keep away from the derogatory time period for American infants born to undocumented immigrants. CNN reported that Trump declared that “anchor babies” are not American citizens. It landed just as Bush began showing backbone against relentless rhetoric by Trump, who on Wednesday hammered Bush for his Iraq and immigration policies and ridiculed his deflated poll numbers.
“There’s a big difference between Donald Trump and me”, Bush declared in New Hampshire on Thursday. After taking questions from the crowd, Trump added “You know what is happening to Jeb’s crowd right down the street?” Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips says Bush has a conservative record and tea party activists want to hear more. But U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, received an AFP award from David Koch, who said Jordan has a almost flawless lifetime score on AFP’s report card.
With all that money and institutional support, Bush’s team says it’s secure because it has the luxury of time. He fired back at ABC News reporter Tom Llamas on Thursday when asked about using the phrase: “You mean it’s not politically correct and yet everybody uses it?”
In a poll last week of Granite State voters conducted by the Boston Herald, 18 percent said they favored Trump, 13 percent favored Bush and 12 percent favored Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who also held a town hall earlier in the day Wednesday.
