‘Straight Outta Compton’ Tops Box Office Opening Weekend with $56.1 Million
Variety later reported that the film was expected to bring in $49 million its opening weekend.
The biopic has smashed box office expectations, earning $60.2 million during its weekend debut, according to The Associated Press.
Moviegoers attending the new hit biopic Straight Outta Compton were met by heightened security at Saskatoon’s downtown movie theatre.
Although Ice Cube is not actually in the movie, his son O’Shea Jackson Jr.is, he still has a producer credit so Straight Outta Compton is by far the biggest hit of his career. That’s a particularly rough start considering that “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” cost a sizable $75 million to produce.
“Straight Outta Compton” follows the story of the groundbreaking hip-hop group N.W.A and was produced with a budget of only $29 million. The movie stars Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill as agents during the 1960s.
For its last week before its opening, “Compton” spent $4.4 million in national TV advertising from 992 national airings of the commercial. That’s an abysmal $42.1 million in 10 days (abysmal for a $120 million superhero film).
The other big new film release, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., took just $13.5m (£8.6m) over the weekend, entering the chart at number three.
The carrier got a boost after unveiling its iPhone Forever promotion, in which customers can receive the most current Apple (AAPL) 16GB iPhone 6 for $22 per month and then upgrade to the next model once it becomes available.
The film, centers around “The World’s Most unsafe Group” and their rise to fame with songs like “Straight Outta Compton” and “F*** Tha Police”, and features their run-ins with law enforcement. That said, the movie should be able to at least make its money back by the end of its run, as the film has already crossed $100 million when overseas totals are factored in.
