Former AG Eric Holder returning to private law practice
“It is a source of great pride to welcome Eric back to the firm after his distinguished service as attorney general”, said Timothy Hester, chair of the firm’s management committee. His tenure as U.S. attorney general has been marked not only by advances in civil rights, but also battles with Republican lawmakers and some controversial comments.
Mr. Holder’s service as attorney general marks the most recent chapter in a remarkable career in public service.
In an interview with the National Law Journal, he indicated that this is the “last stop” of his career.
Holder suspects that he would be snubbed by many public institutions anyway, he said, because of his aggressive stance on certain issues, such as corporate and financial fraud, that threaten the agenda of certain establishments.
“There are instances along the way like that that make me understand why I wanted this guy to be president and I supported him early on”, Holder said of Obama.
“Holder regularly found himself the target of Republican ire over voting-rights enforcement and the gun-trafficking sting Operation Fast and Furious, which has been blamed for the death of a border agent”. Holder will rejoin Covington & Burling, a prestigious DC law firm, after more than six years as the nation’s top law enforcement officer.
As if Americans don’t have reason enough not to elect Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States, one possible effect of such a decision could be Eric Holder sitting on the Supreme Court.
“This is home for me”. “…Being engaged in the civic life of this country is consistent with my worldview that lawyers need to be socially active”. And then you think, well, the flag didn’t fly in South Carolina till 1961 or 1962, 100 years after the Civil War, so it wasn’t really about heritage then.
Asked to explain why he decided to join Twitter now, Holder (@EricHolder) said he was “so affected” by the events in Charleston that he “just felt the need to express the feelings that I had”.
“I couldn’t be happier to rejoin the firm and to have the opportunity once again to work with its exceptional lawyers and staff, for whom I have such high regard”, Mr. Holder said.
