Obama: Targeting police is ‘completely unacceptable’
In a statement, Obama asked for support of police families. He included Goforth in that count. Even more recently, an aspiring rapper killed a Las Vegas police officer, inspiring calls to ban gangsta rap entirely.
One of the defense attorneys for the man charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of a suburban Houston deputy says his client intends to plead not guilty.
The suspect, Shannon J. Miles, made his first appearance in court Monday, but no definitive reason was given why he allegedly emptied his pistol into the sheriff’s deputy, other than an obvious intent to target law enforcement.
“He had indicated to the investigating officers that he was not involved in the case”, Miles’ attorney, Anthony Osso, told AP on Monday.
Monday morning, Black Lives Matter, which has taken on presidential candidates and interrupted campaign speeches, said the move from the DNC does not equate to an endorsement from the movement. A prayer walk in Goforth’s honor drew hundreds of people Sunday evening, and Gov. Greg Abbott ordered Texas flags in Harris County and at the Capitol to be lowered to half-staff to honor Deputy Goforth. Goforth fell to the ground, at which point the gunman stood over the dying deputy and continued to shoot.
Miles, who graduated in 2003 from a high school near the gas station, Cypress Falls, and played on the football team there, did not have to enter a plea at the probable-cause hearing.
A witness positively identified Miles in a lineup as the shooter, Anderson said.
The gas station’s surveillance camera video showed the truck had a trailer hitch on the back and a white cooler in the bed. Miles’s mother has come forth with an alibi on his behalf.
Miles’ criminal history includes an arrest in 2012 following a fight at a homeless shelter he was staying at in Austin. Fifteen 40-caliber shell casings were around him, she said.
Osso, the defense lawyer, didn’t want to talk about Miles possibly retaliating against police. “We’re not looking to make it a race issue”. “This crime is going to unite us”.
De Los Santos echoed authorities’ comments over the weekend that Goforth was killed because he wore a uniform.
Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman spoke to the media the day after the shooting, calling the attack “clearly unprovoked”.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) unanimously adopted a resolution in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement on Friday afternoon during a summer meeting in Minneapolis.
Maybe then, her black life would have mattered enough for us to more fully explore the significance of its loss, and to gin up some anger about how casually it was taken.
“All Lives Matter” should not exist, at least, when it refers explicitly to Black Lives Matter. It gained more traction past year, when Michael Brown was killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner died after an apparent chokehold by a New York police officer. The party also condemned the “extrajudicial killings of unarmed African American men, women and children”.
Deray McKesson, a pacesetter of Black Lives Matter, the peaceable protest motion spawned by current police killings of black individuals elsewhere in america, criticised the sheriff for heightening tensions together with his feedback. There is no justification or sense in his death.
“When rhetoric ramps up to the point where cold-blooded assassination has happened, this rhetoric has gotten out of control”, Hickman explained.
Marchers chanted in unison, “Pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon…”
“One of them was only a little bit older than us and to be placed in their position, I just think I would be heartbroken”, said Chris. “We’re going to have to figure this out, whether it’s training for police or having a sit-down to decrease the rhetoric – particularly if it discusses violence at all“.
Last December, New York police officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were fatally shot while sitting in their squad auto. We still know nothing about the killer’s motives, but spokesmen from the police and prosecutor’s office immediately leveraged the incident to criticize groups that have protested police violence. But 15 officers were also killed in ambush attacks in 2009, 2010, and 2011, CNN reports.
