Tim Scott defends use of ‘all lives matter’
“This is not an either/or question”, said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington-based think tank that convened meetings in Chicago and Washington. Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was shot 15 times at close range at a gas station outside Houston Friday, according to a prosecutor in the case.
“Don’t be fooled. We’re targeting the brutal system of policing, not individual police”.
Earlier this year, the governing committee of Harrison Township, NJ approved a resolution “Recognizing and Honoring” the service of law enforcement officers. “This is about a vendetta that the police have against Black Lives Matter Pasadena and those who are involved with Black Lives Matter Pasadena”, Williams said. Video of the incident has gone viral on right-wing blogs and news sites.
That’s why we call for an immediate end to the centuries of brutality against black people by the police and by white vigilantes. And Republicans are using the deaths of these police officers to criticize President Obama and his administration, which has at times aligned with the protesters in pushing for police reform.
Clarke is known for his brash opinions about police brutality protesters, but in substance, if not in style, most Americans seem to agree.
In a backhanded way, the widespread criticism of the cops, courts and prisons is a great compliment to them, their reward for whatever role they played in restoring social tranquility to the point where abuses or excesses by the authorities loom larger, in reality and perception, than crime itself. But we’ve all clearly chosen to understand “fighting” not as literal bloodshed, but as engaging in the peaceful political process. Yet neither far more relevant threats to black lives warranted a single mention in the Times’ self-serving sermon. “They set it back 35 years in one night because the police weren’t allowed to protect people”. It’s not just the laws we like.
A Baltimore judge ruled Wednesday that the six officers charged in Gray’s death would be tried separately. So if to just say, “All Lives Matters” is to “cover up an unpleasant truth” as the NYT claims, then you also have to admit that embracing Black Lives Matter with no acknowledgement of the associated violence against police is no less of an effort at concealment. Not black children killed by black criminals obviously.
So when the GOP defends law enforcement departments that have notoriously fraught relationships with communities of color, it is a surefire way of alienating those black and brown people-and drawing in Americans who resent them.
Since the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin there has been a Black Lives Matter movement across the United States.
Signs that read “Police Lives Matter” and “We Stand with Blue” were held by supporters along area roadways as officials continued a manhunt for three armed suspects in the shooting of Lt. Joe Gliniewicz. After charges were announced against Goforth’s alleged killer, Laura Ingraham, an influential conservative commentator, tweeted: “Has the #BlackLiesMatter ppl come out in his defense yet?” But he said the GOP is the “big tent” party of the future with two Hispanics and one black candidate in the field of 17.
Police really feel like they’re beneath assault by minority teams.
“Of course ALL lives matter”.
Before long, Jackson also entered the Twitter feud, maintaining his stance against Black Lives Matter and calling the group a “disgrace to black people.”
This is a typical right-wing reaction to the growing influence of a movement for black lives. The contributor, who has become famous as a race-baiter and liberal-basher, piled on: “Well, they should do it, but unfortunately it’s being financed by the leftists“. Both occasions were many days after the demonstration, proving that this is not anything about law and order or about justice.
