A 63, a Spieth rally and a storm delay at PGA Championship
Jones shared top-spot with fellow Australian Jason Day at the end of the second day, which was brought to a premature end when a violent storm struck at Whistling Straits, but he extended his advantage after he completed his final six holes on Saturday.
However, the world number one then bogeyed the sixth and eighth and mixed two more bogeys with four birdies on the back nine to card a 68 and finish six under par at Whistling Straits.
The Swede got as low as eight-under, and his 36-hole total of seven-under 137 gave him the outright lead when he walked off the course.
After an exciting third round on Saturday at the 97th PGA Championship, Australian Jason Day leads the pack at 15-under par after firing a stellar round of 66.
Justin Rose pulled within one shot of the lead with back-to-back birdies. “I can’t say anything else because I’m going to cry”. “Thirty seconds later they blew the horn, so my name was mud walking up the 18th”.
“I can’t remember the last time I had a 4:50 alarm”, Grace said.
First-round leader Dustin Johnson lost ground in the rough and in the bunkers, and fell out of the lead with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch.
Spieth, who won the Masters and U.S. Open, is 50 under in the four majors this year but was merely one under Saturday until sinking a 16-foot putt on No. 12.
Day and Spieth will tee off at 2:45.
Spieth’s round turned on an unexpected birdie at the treacherous par-four 18th where he spectacularly holed out for birdie from a tricky lie in a greenside bunker.
“I’ve viewed them as very stressful and kind of hard to go out and play the next day but I’m enjoying myself, it’s been fun to be in pressure situations and it’s good to have the lead”. “I’m just struggling a little bit today”. “With a couple chip-ins for the week and really smart course management and good speed control, we have been able to hold ourselves in there”.
The 22-year-old Texan can also topple Rory McIlroy from the top of the world rankings this week.
Spieth, looking for his third major victory of the year, put together a 5-under round of 67 in the morning to move to 6-under for the week.
As well as his three bogeys, the five-time major victor three-putted the 16th from long range for par and said: “It could have been in the low 60s and possibly broken the major record”. But he played the remaining holes in even par, unable to keep pace with playing partner Spieth, who picked up three birdies on his inward run.
“I felt like I played better than what the score reflected”.
Spieth won the Masters and the U.S. Open earlier this year.
It’s just one of Johnson’s major near misses – the most recent a three-putt finish to the US Open at Chambers Bay.
“Today was a good day”, said Day.
A hot, humid morning saw plenty of birdies on the par-72, 7,501-yard Straits course hugging the shores of Lake Michigan. Two players – Greg Norman and Vijay Singh – did it twice.
He then carded bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie over the next four holes before coming alive at the turn.
The previous best at a major was the 19-under 269 by Tiger Woods when he triumphed by eight shots in the 2000 British Open at St. Andrews.
