Amy Schumer joins Sen. Chuck Schumer to push for gun control legislation
The actress spoke candidly about concerns that her film may have in some way motivated the shooter, who had a history of mental illness and was alleged to have anti-feminist views.
Amy Schumer raised expectations that she could take an active role in female-fronted opposition to US gun rights on Saturday, after responding positively on Twitter to an open letter from a woman whose mother survived the Sandy Hook massacre three years ago. They cited the recent shooting in a Louisiana movie theater that killed two women and injured nine others during a screening of the movie “Trainwreck” starring Amy Schumer.
Amy Schumer’s phone rang recently. Schumer last week called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the agency responsible for vetting potential gun buyers, to investigate how the Lafayette shooter was able to obtain a firearm, despite having an arson charge and involuntary commitment on his record.
“I don’t know why he chose my movie but it’s very personal to me”, Schumer said at a press conference in New York on Monday.
The senator made an appearance with his cousin, actress Amy Schumer, to support a measure that would reward states that submit information to the federal background check system and penalize those that don’t.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, is teaming up comic and actress Amy Schumer – his second cousin as soon as eliminated – to step up the push for brand spanking new gun management laws on Capitol Hill.
“I have a lot of press conferences but I nearly never get this much attention”, Sen. “Don’t worry I’m on it. You’ll see”. “We need a background check system without holes and fatal flaws”. Implementing these cuts within the wake of the a number of mass shootings which have occurred this yr is “the equal of a shoulder shrug to the victims”, Sen. “These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence, but I promise they won’t be my last”. The senator also called on Congress to fully fund the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which saw $150 million of its budget slashed, Schumer said.
“If there is anything that the mass shooting in Lafayette, Chattanooga, Charleston, Virginia Tech, Aurora and many other places has taught us, it’s that we should do everything in our power to tighten these loopholes and prevent weapons from falling into the hands of hateful evil-doers and the mentally disturbed”, Senator Schumer said.
