It has new features, a streamlined Web browser called Edge and a desktop version of Cortana, the online assistant that is Microsoft’s answer to Google Now and Apple’s Siri.
Is Windows 10 worth it?If you’re running Windows 8 on a non-touch-based device, you should upgrade as soon as possible. But with all the talk of free versions and paid for versions, upgrade reservations and mandatory installations, you may be a little confused as to how best to get the new operating system onto your machine. You can also ask “What’s up?” and Cortana will tell you interesting facts or what happened on this day in history.
The feedbacks and inputs from the users and developers were all utilized by Microsoft to enhance the OS so that when it finally came out, it was nearly like a perfectly brewed coffee just waiting to be served.
Alternate methods include using the Get Windows 10 app, part of a previous OS update. Any time you open Explorer they’ll be there, just one more click away.
Somewhat wary of Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system I decided to make sure all my documents, images, programs and emails were safely stored on a new laptop before testing an upgrade from Windows 8. Assuming that you have all of your latest Windows Updates installed (including the crucial KB3035583) you should see a small Windows icon appear next to the clock on the bottom right of your screen. As with Dropbox and Google Drive, OneDrive typically keeps copies of all your files on your computer so you have them while offline. This spring, for instance, the Redmond, Wash. company added an app to hundreds of millions of Windows 7 and 8.1 devices that trumpeted the free upgrade, put a one-year time limit on the deal to accelerate adoption and recently began a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign. So for now, it’s really Windows 8.5 and not Windows 10 until all of the features are available. Users who fall for the scheme will not get access to Windows 10, but instead to CTB-Locker – a risky form of malware dubbed as “ransomware” by experts.
So far, reviews have been kind with Windows 10; Nate Ralph of CNET was pleased with it, describing it as a “vastly improved vision for the future of computing” that works perfectly on both tablets and traditional PCs. Because you might feel awkward talking to your computer, you have the option of typing in commands, such as “Remind me to get milk”.
The Windows 10 update doesn’t automatically uninstall rival browsers while upgrading, though users need to go through a series of tricky steps if they choose to restore their browser of choice.
Having used the pre-release version of Windows 10, I knew what to expect.
