Anti-Abortion Activists In Ohio Push To Ban Abortions For Down Syndrome
Lawmakers in Ohio are set to vote on a bill that would outlaw abortions if the the motivation is to avoid having a baby that has Down Syndrome as states continue to try and limit access to abortion throughout the country.
All of this makes disability-selective abortion possible for Down syndrome in the way it now isn’t for other conditions.
But Ohio’s law does contain language that could make it slightly more actionable than the North Dakota legislation.
“They simply see him as a moderate”, said Republican strategist Terry Brown “I don’t think it’s a label that fits, but somewhere along the way, people began to see him as sort of a Jeb Bush-like character that is kind of wishy-washy on certain key conservative issue”.
One Ohio anti-abortion activist says she was pressured to have an abortion when one of her three children was diagnosed with Down syndrome. He argues that “the best way to get people to choose to carry a fetus with Down syndrome to term is to make the words “Down syndrome” less scary” and “get to work building a more inclusive society”. Pretty soon, we’re going to find the gene for autism.
According to abortion rights lawyers, the law would violate the Roe v. Wade decision by the Supreme Court.
“He is a phony”, said Kellie Copeland, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio executive director. “Medical decisions should not be made in the Statehouse, they should be made in doctors’ offices based on sound medical science.”
John Kasich’s standing continues to rise to an all-time high among voters in the Buckeye State as he campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination, according to the latest results from a Quinnipiac University poll of swing states released Tuesday.
The measure also raises a tough question for Kasich – who has said he is anti-abortion rights, but also supports exemptions for cases involving rape, incest or the life of the mother.
Ohio would join South Dakota on the vanguard of laws banning abortion for genetic disorders, which include Down Syndrome, as South Dakota passed a law banning abortion for this reason in 2013.
Gov. John Kasich, a Republican who is running for president, opposes abortion but has not yet taken a position on this bill. Early childhood. Infant mortality.
