Apple boosts employee diversity
Apple Inc stated 35% of its new hires worldwide final yr have been women, whereas 24% of US hires have been black or Hispanic.
Last year Google reported that its workforce was only 30 percent female, 2 percent Black and 3 percent Hispanic. As one example, we’re proud that our spending on women- and minority-owned businesses exceeded $650 million previous year.
“We believe the information we report elsewhere on this site is a far more accurate reflection of our progress toward diversity”, the company said.
Intel Corporation has lost 0.48% in the last five trading days and dropped 1.95% in the last 4 weeks.
Tech companies such as Apple and Google have released their workforce diversity details in recent years, as Silicon Valley’s companies faced criticism over their negligence towards improving the employee mix.
Nevertheless, Cook remained steadfastly optimistic that Apple will continue to make progress in hiring more applicants who are female and come from underrepresented backgrounds. Even with the new increases, Apple is 69% male and 54% white, compared to its 2014 numbers: 70% male and 55% white.
The number of white and Asian technical workers at Apple also increased from 77 per cent last year to 78 per cent this year.
Apple hired 65 percent more women, 50 percent more blacks and 66 percent more Latinos in the past 12 months, according to the company’s annual Diversity Report, released Thursday.
“We aspire to do more than just make our company as diverse as the talent available to hire”, he said.
Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson issued a statement applauding Apple for making strides in hiring – which he said may be the most significant gains in the tech industry, in terms of sheer numbers – and for releasing its federal Equal Employment Opportunity report, which provides a closer look at the racial composition of its workforce by job category.
“Our goal with Intel technology is to help solve real problems and enable experiences that are truly desired by people and businesses”, he said.
“It’s disappointing to see there’s still a substantial gap for women, particularly in leadership and technologist roles, but we understand this is a long game that doesn’t change overnight”, Envato’s global communications and PR manager Venessa Paech says.
Despite the recent rise in the hiring of minorities, the overall workforce breakdown of the company did not change much. “We see both”, writes Cook. Though it does seem to have a higher percentage of Hispanics (11 percent) and Blacks (8 percent) than some of the other large companies.
