Apple committed to producing an electric vehicle by 2019
Having had nothing to go on bar a few vague claims of an Apple electric vehicle , sources within the company now say that the company are shifting significant resources to its creation with a launch year of 2019 as its target.
Apple certainly seems to be putting its energies into Project Titan as of late. The Nissan Leaf is the next highest selling electric auto in the U.S.as of August.
USA Today shared that some members of the Titan project have come onboard from Elon Musk’s Tesla and that the company had also been in talks for securing a location as its automotive testing site.
As an outsider to the auto industry, Apple faces a number of challenges.
Jobs’ Mob has spent more than a year investigating the feasibility of an Apple-branded vehicle , including meetings with two groups of government officials in California.
Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told a crowd of reporters at the show, “What is important for us is that brain of the vehicle , the operating system is not iOS or Android or someone else but it’s our brain”.
The company’s plans to build a self-driving vehicle , dubbed Project ‘Titan, ‘ have been so far, kept top secret.
However, we do know Apple will likely do what it does best when it enters a new market and take what competitors have done and make it exponentially better. We’ll see if that strategy applies to this very new and different market, however.
Other details surrounding the vehicle are still shrouded in mystery though.
Jony Ive, who was recently promoted to the newly created position of Apple design chief, has been complaining about American cars for years. Another complication is how the cars would be sold; Apple is a centralized company whose preferred method of distribution is through direct sales and the Apple Store.
