Armed attack in Turkey, police officer killed
The medic, believed to be Dr. Çagla Seven, grasps the fatally wounded woman’s hand amid the chaos and carnage.
The incident came after the murder of two policemen on Wednesday – for which the PKK has claimed responsibility – and Monday’s deadly suicide bombing in southeastern Sanliurfa province, near the Syrian border, which killed 32 people.
Local newspapers are calling the now-viral image, “the photo that marked the day”.
Seven, a newly qualified doctor, lived after being airlifted to a hospital in the Turkish capital of Istanbul, but her unidentified friend later died.
“It would be the right thing to do for us also to continue our contribution by supporting the Peshmerga in Iraq”, she added.
Television footage showed bodies lying beneath trees outside a cultural centre in the mostly Kurdish town six miles from the stricken Syrian town of Kobane.
It is understood SAS counter-terrorism experts based in southern Turkey have examined the site. Abdullah Ciftci, the district governor of Suruc, said that the suicide attack increased the possibility of the involvement of ISIS militants.
Thousands of foreign fighters have crossed through Turkey to join Islamic State over the past few years, fuelling accusations from the government’s opponents that it is turning a blind eye, it said.
The deal granting access U.S. forces use of Incirlik for manned air attacks on ISIS was said to have been sealed with a high level phone call between President Barack Obama and his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“India strongly opposes terrorism in all its forms and stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Turkey”.
