Australia paceman Pat Cummins out of Bangladesh tour
David Beakley, Cricket Australia physiotherapist was quoted as saying, Pat Cummins experienced lower back pain during the last ODI match in the United Kingdom and this pain continued upon his return to Australia. Should his recovery go well he’ll be fine to play in next year’s T20 World Cup.
Cummins was earmarked to feature against New Zealand and West Indies in Australia’s home season but suffered a relapse of his back injury in the final game of the ODI series in England, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker.
Cummins, who was named in the Australian squad for the coming tour of Bangladesh, has had a history of back problems since a man-of-the-match performance in his only Test, against South Africa in 2011.
We have opted to replace him with Faulkner. “He is a young bowler with a bright future for Australia and we were really pleased with how he bowled in the United Kingdom”, Marsh said.
On this occasion, the quick first felt pain during the fifth and final one-day global against England earlier this month. Fast bowler Pat Cummins has been ruled out due to an injury.
“He is an exciting young bowler who could be very handy in the conditions we are likely to see in Bangladesh“, said Marsh.
“To now know it is Pat, I’m close with Pat and have spent a lot of time with him, I’m shattered for him but it is nice to get the phone call”.
Faulkner is a crucial member of Australia’s limited-overs teams but his only Test experience came in the series-ending Ashes Test at the Oval in 2013.
The latest breakdown will be a bitter pill for the 22-year-old Cummins, who has suffered two previous back stress fractures, along with a serious heel injury and a side strain since his dazzling seven-wicket haul as an 18-year-old debutant in Johannesburg.
Faulkner returns to the national set-up having missed the ODI series in England after he was charged with drink-driving in Manchester in July.
Australia will tour Bangladesh for two-match Test series.
The first Bangladesh-Australia starts on October 9 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.
Fellow all-rounders Mitch Marsh and Glenn Maxwell are already in the squad, but Faulkner thinks there is space for all of them in the same 11.
