Benjamin Netanyahu: Israel PM urges action against Islamic State and Iran in
There were angry confrontations outside Downing Street on Wednesday between protesters demanding Mr Netanyahu’s arrest for what they say amount to war crimes in Gaza and pro-Israel activists.
Obama and Netanyahu have not met face to face since the nuclear deal Obama and other world leaders struck with Iran sent a deep chill through U.S.-Israeli relations.
During their talks, they agreed that cyber security was a vital issue, and that it had to be considered both in terms of threats and opportunities.
He again stated he was “ready to resume direct negotiations with the Palestinians with no conditions whatsoever to entering negotiations… immediately”.
The spokesperson said, both leaders reiterated their commitment to a two state resolution as the only way to secure lasting peace in the Middle East, and the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of improving daily life for the people of Gaza.
“I believe that we can co-operate in practical ways to roll back the tide of militant Islam both in the Middle East and in Africa”, Nethanyahu said during his meeting with the British Prime Minister, according to the Press Association.
But Mr Netanyahu remains bitterly opposed to the accord and is reportedly lobbying the US Congress to block the deal. He added that while Iran publicly threatens to destroy Israel, it is constantly working on its long-range capabilities, and could easily aim its missiles at Europe too.
“Europe should support Israel – not pressure Israel, not attack Israel, but support Israel, which is the only real shield that Europe and the Middle East have against extremist Islam, which is surging”, he told reporters.
One member of Netanyahu’s delegation said, “Claims that strong opposition to the Iran deal will destroy [Israel’s] relationship with the United States in general, and with the Democrats in particular, have been completely refuted”. “The third point is technology – the future belongs to those who innovate”, Netanyahu said in the statement.
Pro-Palestinian campaigners have denounced Mr Netanyahu’s visit.
But the Conservative party-led government rejected the bid saying “visiting heads of foreign governments have immunity from legal process, and can not be arrested or detained”.
Biden’s office later confirmed that “we are now discussing with the Israeli prime minister’s office possible dates for the next meeting between the president and Prime Minister Netanyahu”, but that there’s “no announcement of a meeting at this time“.
