Bernie Sanders Describes GOP Debate As “Pretty Sad”, “Really Painful”
Before the debate began, Sanders asked in a tweet whether the candidates would discuss “serious issues”, and he spent much of the debate wondering when they would get to the issues he considers most pressing. The two states had proven decisive in past primaries. Briggs knows the state well, having worked as press secretary for former Sen.
NPR’s Tamara Keith accurately reported that Sanders’ reception “was pretty muted except for… one moment”.
“I’ve worked with Time on many occasions in the past so their photo editor reached out to me for the shoot, which was scheduled for the very next day”, Stiles told the Times-Mirror this afternoon.
Sanders had previewed some of those provisions in a statement last week. It turned out to be a winning decision as the self-described Democratic socialist’s barbed remarks racked up thousands of retweets and favourites. “I am a born-again Christian. It is the philosophy of Jesus Christ”.
Sanders gave up after more than two and a half hours. When Hillary Clinton had one in Atlanta earlier in the summer, it took place at Buckhead Mansion, a luxury rental space, in an event that was closed to the press. His willingness to campaign on hostile southern Virginia turf is proof that he intends to fight her everywhere on the map, not just in Bernie-friendly enclaves like Iowa and New Hampshire.
Cruz and other Republicans who cite such figures think about inequality very differently than Sanders does, of course.
Still, West contends that Sanders’ decision to speak at the college without altering his message took some guts. He pushes for universal health insurance, public financing of elections, fairer trade policies, better treatement of veterans, higher minimum wages, and fewer jobs shipped overseas.
“It is easy to try to frighten people“, he said of Jindal. Americans are fed up, so frustrated they’re supporting a self-obsessed billionaire who moonlighted as a reality star and a socialist senator from Vermont who’s 74 and shouts himself hoarse every night.
Sanders surprised political pundits by appearing at Liberty University’s overwhelmingly conservative campus on Monday morning.
At his event at Winthrop University, Sanders spoke to nearly 4,500 people, and was introduced by a local Black Lives Matter activist in addition to West.
St. John, 49, of Fargo, said the regional support for Sanders comes down to his liberal policies and authentic character, which resonate with old and young people alike. Echoing Sanders, she said that only women should “make decisions about their own bodies”.
He also criticized a U.S. Supreme Court decision altering the Voting Rights Act, that enable lawmakers to make changes without getting pre-approval from the U.S. Justice Department.
