Bernie Sanders draws large crowd to Portland, Oregon, arena
Sanders is the first of two presidential candidates scheduled to be in the Los Angeles area in a two-day span. Florida Sen.
The problem with Sanders’, and with white Seattle progressives in general, is that they are utterly and totally useless (when not outright harmful) in terms of the fight for Black lives. The activist group is the city’s Black Lives Matter chapter, who pushed fences and jumped barricades around the stage to steal the show from the senator.
On Saturday during Sanders’ rally in Westlake Park, two black women jumped up on either side of the Democratic presidential candidate as he prepared to speak. Tonight, he plans to speak about moving “big money” out of politics, climate change, affordable education and handling “obscene wealth and income inequality”, according to his campaign website.
Those at the Sunday event said that they don’t know if similar protests will occur at appearances by other political candidates. The second event is where Sanders’s microphone got taken away by activists from a dozen protesters. But don’t expect the Democratic Party, the mainstream media, Hollywood and the left-wing blogosphere to ever describe Black Lives Matter in this manner. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., speaks at a rally, Sunday, August 9, 2015, at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore.
“After sharing a few local grievances with the crowd, including school disparities and gentrification in Seattle, the protesters asked for a period of silence to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown being shot and killed during a confrontation with a police officer in Ferguson, Mo”.
“We must pursue policies that transform this country into a nation that affirms the value of its people of color”.
Sanders’s endorsement from National Nurses United, which represents almost 190,000 nurses – most of whom are women – comes as he battles Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.
The Vermont senator was in Seattle Saturday, but his speech was cut short after Black Lives Matter protesters took the stage. He was seen shaking hands and taking pictures with the crowd on his way out of the event. Sanders released a statement saying he was disappointed he wasn’t able to talk about Social Security and Medicare.
“Your voice is important and we want to hear what you have to say, but you have to do it in a diplomatic manner”.
Organizers thanked the crowd and Sanders for coming, with one organizer stating, “this is not the ending we had hoped for”.
