Bernie Sanders energizes large South Carolina crowd
What is fascinating is that through Sanders and Trump couldn’t be more different culturally, their programs overlap a great deal. Though Mr Sanders has served in Washington since 1991, he sees himself as an outsider: a self-described democratic socialist from an ornery mountain state, who sits in Congress as an independent. It’s his first extended campaign trip here first since he canceled a swing after the June massacre in which a white gunman killed nine people in a historically black church in Charleston.
However, shortcomings Bernie Sanders does indeed have, and his supporters would do well to acknowledge them and welcome efforts at improving his campaign.
South Carolina isn’t obvious Sanders territory.
The two big surprises of the 2016 presidential race so far are Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.
Thus, Democrats like Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Elizabeth Warren, would guarantee an equality of outcome, as if my poor writing skills would suddenly be deemed the equal of John Grisham, David McCullough, or Daniel Silva.
Thousands lined up inside the TD Convention Center in Greenville to see Bernie Sanders. In Real Clear Politics’ average of polls, Sanders has gone from 12.7 percent to 25.0 percent since July 1, while Trump has gone from 6 percent to 22 percent. And they were not much more diverse, even though African-Americans account for half of the Democratic primary voters in the Palmetto State.
And he pledged that his nominees to the Supreme Court would have to promise themselves that they would try to overturn the Citizens United decision that allows corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to spend unlimited sums in campaigns. “Hel-looooo, South Carolina!” she sang out, before giving a brief rundown of Sanders’s platform, including his calls for tackling economic inequality, reducing the prison population and making college education affordable for everyone. A typical Sanders speech resembles a 90-minute sermon on modern America’s ills, delivered in the growling tones of his native Brooklyn. They said the protestors should have targeted Hillary Clinton or Republican candidates who are decidedly to the Right of Bernie on racial issues. And they seem to think that few of the latest crop of presidential hopefuls can offer anything more than that.
“I find it remarkable that we have many young Americans who have criminal records for smoking marijuana, but not one major wall street executive has been prosecuted”, Sanders said. It’s what I am saying.
Neither one of these definitions is what Sanders is talking about. “We have an agenda that I believe can bring people together, and when we do that, we’re going to win this election very easily I think”.
