Bernie Sanders Says Donald Trump Appeals to ‘Baser Instincts’ of Xenophobia

First Lady Michelle Obama, no stranger to the late-night talk show circuit, is paying a visit to Stephen Colbert.

Colbert asked Sanders whether he was the “Democratic Trump“, prompting the senator from Vermont to offer a harsh critique of the real estate mogul who’s become the Republican front-runner. Sanders responded that Trump was preying on “xenophobia and, frankly, racism – describing an entire group of people, in this case, Mexicans, as rapists or as criminals”.

Sanders said, “We want a society which encourages entrepreneurship and innovation … not a society in which the very rich get much richer while virtually everybody else gets poorer”.

The timing of this guest booking is key for the new “Late Show”: This episode will air opposite Trevor Noah’s first night as the host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show”.

Colbert tweeted out a comic video bit they did with Sanders, and the campaign tweeted, “enjoy your #FeeltheBern mug!”

“Is everybody “feeling the Bern”?” asked Colbert, repeating a Sanders campaign slogan.

“I think that is disgraceful and not something we should be doing in 2015″, he added.

Sanders, who is now a strong rival to Hillary Rodham Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire, said it’s time Americans demand that “government start working for all of us, not just the few”.

“It’s always an honor to have the First Lady”, said Stephen Colbert. Further, he said, he believed that large voter turnouts would help Democrats not only win the White House in 2016, but also take back the Senate and gain in the House.

Sanders also reiterated that, despite facing competitors with huge campaign accounts, he will not rely on a Super PAC for donations because he doesn’t support the billionaire class. “I don’t want their money”, he said. What I want, what we are doing – and I’m pretty proud of this – we have over 450,000 people who have made individual contributions averaging $31.20 a piece.
